The Energy-Efficient Set-top Box

Opportunity

The set-top box (STB) is a complex device offering a range of features related to the transmission of digital video and audio information. Energy use due to STBs is increasing rapidly as more people acquire them to allow reception of digital, high-definition content, more homes have multiple STBs, manufacturers are equipping them with more functions, and STBs are controlling an increasing number of other products. In addition, newer STB models have enhanced networking capabilities, which further increases energy use.

Solution

Take a fresh look at the "Set-top Box Problem" to identify approaches that may be less well explored than others and more potential energy savings. This will take into account the features of set-top boxes that make them different from most other electronic products in their market structure, usage, technology, and policy options. Follow up on the most promising avenues of development.
