Hard-wired and Builder-installed Equipment in New Homes
Opportunity
New homes include many hard-wired and builder-installed products with electronic components: smoke alarms, garage door openers and other remotely operated devices, doorbells, and structured wiring systems. New homes also include service-provider-installed equipment such as security systems and fiber-optic network termination hardware. Previous work by LBNL shows that new types of builder-installed products, such as structured wiring systems, are significantly increasing energy consumption by these products. Zero-energy homes will not be cost-effective until these uses are understood and reduced.
Solution
Provide builders with lists identifying the most energy-efficient models of Hard-wired and Builder-Installed Equipment to specify in their new homes.
